The Botany Department was created in 1887. Its most prominent collection of specimens, the Rocky Mountain Herbarium, was started in 1893. The Botany Department offered bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees, and encouraged students to study topics such as botany, mycology, zoology, agriculture, molecular biology, wildlife management, and general biology. Wilhelm Gerhard Solheim (1898-1978), was regarded as the foremost authority on the fungi of the Rocky Mountain region and his personal herbarium served as a reference collection for mycologists and plant pathologists. Solheim eventually gifted his personal collection to the University of Wyoming to create the Rocky Mountain Herbarium.
